LÀNG QUÊ BƯNG CẦU

Tôi sanh từ làng quê Bưng Cầu

Xứ Thủ, một cây dầu

Mội Chợ mội Thầy Thơ

Nước trong vắt như lọc

Cây trăm già trĩu trái

Tím ngắt vị ngọt ngào

Trường Làng vừa mới cất

Cặp đệm cũng mới tinh

Ê a học vở lòng

Cặp kè cùng chúng bạn

Vui đùa khắp thôn làng

Tuổi thơ sao vui thú

CHỢ THỦ

Chiến tranh chợt kéo tới

Theo cha về chợ Thủ

Học lấy bằng Pri me (1)

Gia cảnh gặp tai biến

Gạt nưóc mắt theo Cô

Về An Giang Châu Đốc

DÒNG AN GIANG

Trường Tiêu học Châu Phú

Tiếp tục việc học hành

Vừa dậu xong Tiểu học

Người Dượng đã tử trận

Giả biệt Dòng An Giang nước biếc

Trở về chốn quê nhà

TRUNG HỌC QUÊ NHÀ

Trường Nguyễn Trãi Bình Dương

Miệt mài việc học hành

Bằng Thành Chung cũng thích

Brơ vê thấy cũng oai (2)

Đêm nghe bài Tình ca

Tiếng nước tôi bốn ngàn năm

Thấy bùi ngùi trong dạ

Qua học chương trình Viêt

Nguyễn Du ngâm vịnh Kiểu

Đồ Chiểu Lục Vân Tiên

Lãng mạn Phút Ban Đầu Lưu Luyến

Chàng trai tuổi mười tám

Bắt đầu biết mộng mơ

TRƯỜNG QUỐC GIA HÀNH CHÁNH

Học hành lãng đãng vậy

Cũng đậu xong Tú Tài

Lo xây dựng tương lai

Vào học Trường Hành Chánh

Ý hẳn muốn làm quan

Nghe có mùi phong kiến

Bài đầu tiên Thầy giảng

TIÊN THIÊN HẠ CHI ƯU

Bỗng nghe lòng nặng trĩu

Hành chánh lo cho dân

Được An cư Lạc nghiệp

Chớ đâu phải làm quan

Ngồi xỉ tay năm ngón

VÀO ĐỜI

Tiểu Đăng khoa bất chợt

Đại Đăng khoa mừng vui

Phen nầy mặc sức vẩy vùng

Ra tài kinh bang tế thế

Bước vào đời hăm hở

Quyết lập nên sự nghiệp

HÀNH CHÁNH AN DÂN

Bước đầu lo dựng Ấp xây làng

Kế lo lập Hương Ước

Tiếp nối truyền thống Xã thôn xưa

Đình Làng ta tu bổ

Nhà Họp dân dựng lên

Thể hiện lại truyền thống “CÁI ĐÌNH”

Trước là nơi tế lễ cầu an

Sau là chỗ kỳ hào

Bàn việc làng việc nước

Sau rốt mới lễ lạc vui chơi

Rồi TỈNH ĐIỀN ta lập

Năm chục nhà qui thành một khối

Một giếng khơi dùng chung

Đất cấp cho ba mẫu mỗi nhà

Lo tài bồi sinh sống

No ấm kế dài lâu

CỘNG SẢN TÀN PHÁ

Việc làm mới khởi sắc

Cộng sản đã ào vô

Phá tan hoang tất cả

Đình Làng làm Hợp Tác xã

Nhà Họp dân trụ sở yêu ma

Người Xây dựng đày biệt mù san dã

TÙ ĐÀY

Rừng Việt Bắc xa tít mịt mùng

Núi Hoàng Liên lạnh ngắt mù sương

Sắn dui ngày hai chén đá đở dạ

Khổ sai nhọc nhằn trơ xác

Xương tù rải rác khắp núi đồi

KINH TẾ MỚI

Tù trong vừa mới mãn

Tù ngoài tiếp liền theo

Kinh Tế Mới ngặt nghèo

Máu trào hòa nước mắt

Câu Kinh Phật vỗ về

Mộng “Quy Mã” ấp ủ

QUY MÃ

Chương Trình Tù Ra Đi (3)

Như chiếc bè cứu rổi

Mười lăm năm đoạn trường chấm dứt

Thần Tự Do vẫy gọi

Đất nước Mỹ đón chào

Mở ra cuộc đời mới

CUỘC CHIẾN MỚI

Túi mật vừa cắt bỏ

Mới chập chửng đi lại

Liền xáp vô Hội Tù

Cuộc chiến ta đánh tiếp

Sát cánh cùng chiến hữu

Đánh đuổi Việt gian Việt cộng

Quyết bảo vệ Cộng Đồng

Như giữ Làng giữ Ấp ngày xưa

THINH LẶNG

Mười năm đã trôi qua

Việc làm có kết quả

Bỗng bị Quỉ ma phá

Anh em trở mặt chửi nhau

Bùi ngùi trở gót quay về lặng thinh

TÁI CHIẾN

Lại mười năm như chiếc lá bay vèo

Nỗi buồn vừa nguôi ngoai

Chuyện bất bình xãy tới

Dầu tuổi già sức yếu nhưng đâu thể làm ngơ

Lại ra tay đánh tiếp

Nay tuổi già tay run

Chỉ còn cây bút cùn

Cũng quyết đâm bọn gian tà tới số

Học đòi gương người xưa

“NGƯỜI LÍNH GIÀ” lẫm liệt

Tuổi trời còn bao lăm

Chắt chiu ta tận dụng

Đánh trận đánh cuối cùng

Dựng Cờ Vàng phất phới

Trên Quê hương mến thương

THE EBB AND FLOW OF MY LIFE

I - MY BIRTH VILLAGE BUNG CAU

My Birth Village Bưng Cầu

located in Thủ Dầu Một,

Mội Chợ Mội Thầy Thơ.

Mội Chợ was at one end;

on the horse bathing beach,

kids played fun games

of shooting water at each other

with handmade bamboo pressure pipes

and bathed in the murky water.

Mội Thầy Thơ was at the other end.

Its water body was as clear as freshly filtered;

The old-growth Tram fruit tree was often laden

with its good yield

full of finger-sized fruit

in dark purple color

n deliciously sweet taste.

the place where kids got lots of fun.

The village’s school had just been built.

My brand-new school satchel

made from rush

still

remained

its pristine fragrance

and its virgin look.

I had tried hard

eh!, ah!..

the “a, b, c” lesson

in my kindergarten class.

I also made lots of tiny buddies.

with whom I blissfully played

all over our village.

Oh my wonderful childhood,

how joyful ‘twas!

II- LOCAL MARKET THỦ

Alas, the war had approached

My dad and I were evacuated to Market Thủ

where, I had continued my education,

til my graduation,

with a “Pri me” diploma.

Then came a family catastrophe.

I wiped off my tears,

left my loved ones,

moved to An Giang Châu Đốc,

and lived with an auntie of mine.

III- RIVER AN GIANG

I attended Primary School Châu Phú,

until I obtained a certificate of graduation.

then my Auntie’s husband died at a battlefront.

Again, his death changed my life

I said good-bye

to aqua-blue water of River An Giang,

and headed back to my hometown.

IV – HIGH SCHOOL IN MY HOMETOWN

At High School Nguyễn Trãi Bình Dương,

I studied hard and got good results.

I was fond of my Certificate Thành Chung.

Also, I was proud of my Diploma Brơ Vê.

At night,

I listened to,

and felt deeply touched by,

the song “Tình Ca”

about

ups and downs,

in the lengthy journey

of my mother tongue

for four-thousand years long.

Studying Vietnam literature,

I recited

the Tale of Kiều,

the amazing masterpiece

of renown Poet Nguyễn Du,

and “Lục Vân Tiên”

the popular Achef-d'oeuvre

by famous Poet Đồ Chiểu.

Inside my heart

of a teenager at his eighteen;

it has risen an amazing feeling

from the time of romance

n the ever-forgotten moment

at the first glance of love

I would feel an amorous dream arising within.

V- THE NATIONAL SCHOOL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

In spite of my relaxingly studying style,

I had also passed Tu Tai

and became a high school graduate.

Planning for my future,

I attended the National School of Public Administration

for becoming a government official.

My fancy desire somewhat smelled feudalism, eh?

Listening to my professor’s first lecture

about Principle “TIÊN THIÊN HẠ CHI ƯU”,

(WORRY BEFORE THE WORRY OF THE PUBLIC

ONLY TAKE YOUR JOY AFTER THE PEOPLE TAKE THEIRS).

my heart was suddenly submerged

in a heavy feeling.

Administration really means

TAKING GOOD CARE OF

THE WELL-BEING AND STEADY EMPLOYMENT

OF THE PEOPLE, FIRST.

The behave code of a government official

mustn’t allow me

to point my five fingers,

and demand the public,

to follow my commands;

while I wouldn’t do anything else.

VI – INTO REAL LIFE

The Đại Đăng khoa,

my engagement was somewhat unseen.

yet, the Tiểu Đăng khoa,

my wedding party

was

absolutely

full of joys.

Then came the right time,

I could confidently

soar

really high

in the outside world,

to show off my skills and talents

in public administration.

I also wanted to fulfil my desire for a lifetime career.

VI – PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION FOR THE PEOPLE’S WELL BEING

Building hamlets and villages was our first step

then we assisted residents to create their Huong Uoc,

(kinda village constitution

consisting

of

local customs

and basic rights for the people).

It would help carry on ancient tradition

of the public administration for hamlets and villages.

Communal Houses were renovated,

Community Meeting Halls were built for newly established communities.

This practice has its crucial purpose

of bringing back the essence of Tradition “Cái Đình”,

the common place

where

villagers could perform rituals and ceremonies,

the local officials, village elders and scholars

had discuss and settled all issues related to their villages,

and the public could organize festivals and other social events.

Establishing TỈNH ĐIỀN,

(Safe Hamlets/Villages)

Public land was subdivided

into three-acre lots

given to each household to build their shelter

and cultivate for their livelihood.

Each group shared one common water well.

Fifty households were organized into a safe community

where they had enjoyed a steady life and well-being in the long term.

VII - DESTROYED BY COMMUNISTS

Our projects had been fruitfully blooming.

Unfortunately, Hanoi Communist Regime rushed in

and destroyed at will,

everything on its invading paths.

Communal House were converted to Coop Offices

and Community Halls became the so-called People Administrative Headquarters.

Administrators and officials of the former government

had to face their ill fates

in concentration camps

with unknown dates

o’ return.

VIII - IMPRISONMENT

Jungles and forests in remote areas of North Vietnam

were too dense

and ghostly dusky.

Mount Hoàng Liên was chilly n foggy.

Two cassava cups a day had not taken away

the always-starving feelin’

in our nearly-empty stomachs.

Hard labor had transformed our bodies into skeletons.

Here and there,

everywhere,

on the hills and in the woods,

were scattered human bones of dead prisoners.

IV – THE NEW ECONOMIC ZONE

At last, I had been released

from concentration camp – a small penitentiary

and got into a much bigger prison

outside,

the New Economic Zone

of hardship,

o’ spilled blood

mixing with sweats and tears.

Buddhist Mantras helped me retain my inner peace.

I had nurtured “Mộng Quy Mã”,

my dream of moving to America for resettlement.

X - QUY MÃ

The Released Detainees Orderly Departure Program

was my rescue-raft.

Gone with wind,

my fifteen-years

of sufferings

n’ in griefs.

Waving hands of Liberty Goddess

and the Promised Land America

welcomed me to open a new chapter for my life.

XI - THE NEW BATTLE

Immediately after the gallbladder removal

still staggering on my feet

I joined in “Hội Tù”

(Former Political Prisoner Association?)

I stood side by side with my comrades

to continue our ongoing battle

fighting

against Vietcong

and Viet infiltrators

to protect the welfare of our community,

as we did,

in defense of hamlets and villages, in our motherland.

XII – DORMANCY

Ten years had passed.

Our battle was leading

to fruitful outcomes.

Out

of the blue,

devil deeds somewhat got through;

Brothers turned to face each other

Comrades became foes

Dishearten had driven me to dormancy.

XIII – BACK TO THE BATTLE AGAIN

Flew away another ten years as fallen leaves

My bitterness had just been faded;

then came intolerable discontent

too much

to be ignored.

In spite of

my age

old,

my health

frail.

I’ve had no choice but

to fight with my bare hands again.

Now, my hands are trembled.

However,

with

only a worn-out pen,

I could unswervingly stab those evils to their end.

The OLD WARRIOR has courageously

followed

excellent examples of his heroic ancestors.

Not much time in my life

I must save

whatever

left

for the last battle

to raise Cờ Vàng,

the yellow flag with three red stripes

flutteringly flying on my beloved motherland.
